Carpathian Shepherd Dog: Fearless Guardian
The Carpathian Shepherd Dog is a breed of dog native to the Carpathian and Danube regions. It is thought to have originated from Asian dogs. Although this has not been proven, it is believed that the various breeds of sheepdogs found in the Carpathians, like many other mountain sheepdog breeds, are descended from dogs that existed around 9,000 years ago in Mesopotamia.
This breed in particular originated in Romania, where there was a need for a dog suitable for assisting humans in the very hard work of shepherding in the highlands and in the Danube area.
In fact, in these areas, sheep and goat herding was the most important occupation, and this work could not have been carried out without the assistance of sheepdogs to defend the flocks from predators. This dog is strong and agile, capable of fighting lynxes and wolves, and is equally fast and energetic, able to keep bears and wild boars at bay, while at the same time having the stamina to withstand sustained effort.
Even today, although it is also used as a guard dog or companion dog, it is considered one of the best breeds of sheepdog.
Character of the Carpathian Shepherd Dog breed

It is rather wary of strangers, but loyal and protective towards its family, especially children and other animals in the home. It is a very territorial dog, but is not aggressive unless it sees a potential threat. It is a very calm, balanced and alert dog, and its aggression is selective and well calculated. It will never be taken by surprise and will never attack an intruder directly, but will confront them until they are forced to leave.
It adapts very well to family life, but needs to spend a lot of time outdoors, so it would be best if it had space to move around; a house with a garden or land is ideal. It is a very active dog, so it needs exercise every day.
As for training, being a very territorial dog, it must be accustomed to strangers and interactions with unfamiliar people and animals from an early age. Socialisation of puppies and adult dogs is therefore essential.
Appearance of the Carpathian Shepherd dog breed

It also has broad shoulders, which make it appear even more imposing than it is. Its gait is loose and long-striding, and it is very agile. The tail is sword-shaped and hangs down, but is raised when alert.
The head is broad and tapers towards the muzzle, which bears a certain resemblance to that of a wolf. The nose is broad and black, and the almond-shaped eyes are generally brown. The ears are medium-sized, triangular and fall along the cheeks.
The coat is smooth and covers the entire body, longer on the neck, the back of the limbs and the tail, and shorter on the head and lower legs. The upper coat is longer and harder, while the undercoat is softer and denser. The coat colours are dark brown or sandy with various shades.
Care and health of the Carpathian Shepherd Dog breed

As for coat care, a daily brush is sufficient as it tends to shed. It should not be bathed too often as this can damage its skin and coat quality. Bathing should be limited to when it is very dirty and during hot periods of the year.
If it gets enough exercise, a balanced diet is sufficient and it will not have weight problems.
